A Four Star Cargo Douglas DC-3, registration N136FS performing a mail flight from San Juan (Puerto Rico) to Saint Thomas (US Virgin Islands) with 2 crew and 2 passengers, was taxiing for takeoff, when a fire broke out destroying the cockpit section. The crew was able to safely evacuate.

The FAA and airport officials could not tell initially, how many people were on board. The FAA reported later 4 occupants (2 crew, 2 passengers). The occupants evacuated safely, the airplane has been damaged beyond repair.

About half of the 6000 lbs (2700kg) of mail can be recovered, US Postal reported, the rest has been destroyed by fire and water damage.
