Le vol AF272 décolla de Caracas-Maiquetia à 23 h 27 GMT pour effectuer un vol en direction de Pointe à Pitre estimé à 68 mn. A 00 h 14 GMT, le rapport de vol établit un niveau de vol autorisé à 1330, puis 1150 à 00 h 21 GMT et 190 confirmé à 00 h 24.
Après plusieurs tentatives, d'abord infructueuses, la Tour de Pointe à Pitre a pu être contactée pour une autorisation d'approche visuelle de la piste 11.
L'avion commença la descente à partir du niveau de vol 190 et fut aperçu au passage de Saint-Claude à environ 4000 pieds d'altitude.
L'avion frôla la pente sud de la Soufrière située à 3973 pieds d'altitude et à 27,5 km SSW de l'aéroport.
Il avait à son bord 49 passagers et 13 membres d'équipage.
Les 62 personnes périrent dans l'accident.
CAUSE PROBABLE :
L'accident peut être le résultat d'une approche visuelle de nuit, pendant le début de la descente, à partir d'un point incorrectement identifié.
N'ayant pas d'éléments suffisants (l'enregistrement des vols n'ayant pas été retrouvé lors de la localisation de l'épave), la Commission n'a pu établir les causes des événements pouvant conclure à une erreur de pilotage.
